Crawling Down the Ogre: The Greatest Survival Story in Mountaineering
In 1977, Doug Scott and Chris Bonington made the first ascent of Pakistan's Ogre one of the Karakoram's hardest peaks. Descending in the dark, Scott shattered both legs above the ankle. A five-day storm trapped them; Bonington broke ribs and developed pulmonary edema. Scott crawled for nine days to safety. It remains mountaineering's greatest survival story.
